What is Sustainability?
According to the UN World Commission on Environment and Development: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
In the charter for the UCLA Sustainability Committee, sustainability is defined as: “the integration of environmental health, social equity and economic vitality in order to create thriving, healthy, diverse and resilient communities for this generation and generations to come. The practice of sustainability recognizes how these issues are interconnected and requires a systems approach and an acknowledgement of complexity.”

Purpose of Conference
The global environment crisis has manifested itself in extreme climate events, impact on air, water, agriculture, livelihoods and many other dimensions of our ecosystem and threatens the sustainability of our human civilization if immediate remedial measures are not taken in multiple areas. A United Nations report on climate change considers this as “code red” for humanity. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) noted that persistent global emissions have now made it impossible to prevent a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius while our planet is getting irreparably damaged. The environmental crisis is already unfolding and worst is yet to come.
Vivekananda Sustainability Summit spread over 1 day will provide a valuable platform for exchange of views from eminent personalities, experts and thought leaders in various areas of environment impact and sustainability. The summit will bring key stakeholders together from government, corporate sector, academia, non-governmental organizations and civil society at large and will influence opinion makers, increase awareness about the environment crisis, mitigation strategies and roles of various stakeholders.
The conference includes sessions from eminent speakers, an expo demonstrating works of participating organizations working in various areas related to environmental sustainability and an awards ceremony. The awards ceremony will acknowledge and provide awards to various individuals and organizations who have tirelessly contributed notably towards the cause of environmental improvement. The selections will be made by an eminent jury through a credible process.1
